Mariánské Lázně, also known as Marienbad, is a famous spa town in the area of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. This lovely spa town attracts visitors with its charm found in the architecture and surrounding natural beauty – and of course with its natural springs, known to be beneficial for your overall health. If you are turned off by the touristy feel of the spa town of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně is perfect for you as it is smaller and less populated by one-day tourists. The city boasts an abundance of parks and surrounding lush mountains, which provide a perfect backdrop to Mariánské Lázně's numerous noble buildings and spa colonnades. The majority of the gorgeous notable buildings are from the golden era of the spa towns; during the 19th century the spa towns in Bohemia where playgrounds for the rich and famous - aristocrats, celebrities and European Royals flocked to the towns to take in various spa treatments and the curative carbon dioxide springs. Mariánské Lázně only dates back about two hundred years, but the nearby village of Úšovice is noted from 1273, with the springs being first documented in 1341. Mariánské Lázně has played host to Goethe, Chopin, Thomas Edison, Wagner, Franz Joseph I, Czar Nicholas II, and more. It was once regarded as one of the best spa towns in Europe and received approximately 20,000 visitors a year during its height. Today it is a popular destination for those who still flock to the Czech Republic's intriguing spa towns.
