Prague Castle

Prague Castle is a must-see. According to the Guinness World Records, it’s the largest ancient castle in the world – covering a total area bigger than seven football fields.

Prince Borivoj built this spectacular castle to be the seat of his Premyslid dynasty in the late 9th century. It later became residence to Czech kings, Roman emperors and today, the President of the Czech Republic. The castle complex is made up of several palaces and church buildings of various gorgeous architectural styles - from Romanesque to Gothic to the unique contributions of renowned 20th century Slovenian architect Josip Plecnik, hired by First Republic President T. G. Masaryk in the 1920’s. A defining part of the Prague Castle is the majestic Cathedral of St. Vitus. Its construction was initiated by Charles IV. Inside you will find the magnificent St. Wenceslas Chapel and the royal mausoleum with the tombs of former monarchs. In the castle complex you can also see impressive representational areas – the Spanish Hall or Rudolph’s Gallery, complete with stunning paintings of the Emperor Rudolph II.’s era. Do not miss the beautiful Romanesque St. George’s Basilica from the 10th century which is the oldest church within the Prague Castle complex. If you are a fan of classical music, you can attend one of the early evening concerts there. Also in the castle complex is the smallest street in Prague called the Golden Lane. This quaint lane is lined with small picturesque houses that look rather like doll’s houses. They are brightly colored and their origin dates back to the 16th century. Prague goldsmiths, craftsmen and servants lived there during Rudolph’s reign. If you are planning a visit, there are six different tickets (each valid for two days) available which allow entry to various combinations of sights. You can buy tickets at either of two information centers in the Second and Third Courtyards or from ticket offices at the entrances to Golden Lane, the Old Royal Palace and the Story of Prague Castle exhibition.
